How to increase security and control over company computers? Migrating your environment to Microsoft 365

Organizations seeking to increase flexibility, security, and resource management efficiency are increasingly choosing to migrate on-premises environments to the cloud. Microsoft 365 is one of the most popular platforms offering this type of solution.

As part of the client's infrastructure modernization, we migrated the local environment to the Microsoft 365 platform. The work included lease preparation, email migration, and implementation of computer management via Intune and EDR Defender for Business software.

Preparing Entra ID (formerly Azure AD)

The first stage of the project was to create and configure Entra ID. This included:

  • Creating a Microsoft 365 tenant and customizing access policies;
  • Configuring security policies based on Conditional Access, including securing access using MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication);
  • Creating user, group, and team identities.

Email migration to Exchange Online

The next important step was the migration of email to the Microsoft 365 cloud. This process included:

  • Preparation of mailboxes and groups based on analysis of the current environment;
  • Configuring policies to reduce the risk of phishing, malware, and spam attacks;
  • Choosing the optimal migration method;
  • Moving employee mailboxes and testing for correct operation;
  • User support for the new email environment.

Microsoft Intune PC Management

Microsoft Intune was implemented to provide control over endpoint devices, simplify their management, and enable the application of security policies. Key activities included:

  • Computer enrollment in Intune;
  • Implementation of security policies based on Security Baselines;
  • Automatic configuration and distribution of basic applications;
  • Setting update management policies and user profiles;
  • Implementation of LAPS – which allowed for securing the local administrator profile with a variable, unique, strong password for each computer;
  • Preparation of policies to monitor device compliance with company policies, which, if specific policies are not met, cut off access to the organization's cloud resources.

Defender for Business EDR Implementation

The final key element of the migration was ensuring the protection of computers and cloud services by implementing Microsoft Defender for Business EDR. The scope of work at this stage included:

  • Activation and configuration of the Defender for Business service;
  • Defining threat protection policies based on Security Baselines best practices;
  • Configuring security event monitoring, notifications, and tests;
  • Automating threat elimination and incident response;
  • Analysis of the environment using the vulnerability management module and, based on the analysis, implementing recommended patches to secure the environment.

What did the customer gain by migrating to Microsoft 365?

Migrating the client's on-premises environment to the Microsoft 365 cloud platform brought numerous benefits, including increased flexibility in user and computer management, improved security, and significantly reduced the cost of maintaining the on-premises infrastructure. Implementing these solutions allowed the organization to achieve a modern and scalable IT environment that meets modern business and data security requirements.

FAQ

An IT company, or IT firm, deals with information technology in a broad sense. This includes, among other things:

  1. Software design and development: An IT company can create custom applications for other companies or software products for the mass market. Depending on their specialization, these can include mobile applications, desktop applications, web applications, or embedded systems.
  2. Consulting services: An IT company often provides experts to advise on implementing new technologies, optimizing business processes, or selecting appropriate technological solutions.
  3. Cloud solutions: Many IT companies specialize in implementing and managing cloud solutions, such as data storage, application hosting, and data analysis platforms.
  4. IT security: Protection against cyberattacks, security audits, implementing security policies, and network monitoring are just some of the IT companies' responsibilities in this area.
  5. IT infrastructure management: In this area, a company may manage servers, databases, networks, and endpoints.
  6. Technical Support and Service: An IT company may provide support for its own products or general IT support for other companies, managing their technology on a daily basis.
  7. Training: Many IT providers also offer training in software use and secure technology use.
  8. Hardware Solutions: Some IT companies may also provide and configure computer, server, or network hardware.

Depending on their specialization and size, an IT company may offer one, several, or all of the above solutions. When choosing a provider, it's important to thoroughly understand their services and tailor them to your individual needs.
