What do IT Specialists do in Online Support?

In a previous article, we provided some information about the nature of work in Frontline Support. During job interviews, questions about development and advancement opportunities often arise. If you want to learn more about what IT Specialists do in Online Support, be sure to read this article.

Over the years, Online Support has developed a structure that ensures requests quickly reach the right people. The most common division used in companies is the first, second, and third line of support. In our company, it works a bit differently 😊

The First Line of Support is responsible for receiving and handling user requests. If a given issue requires more skills/authorizations/longer turnaround time, it is then escalated. These 'further' employees are IT Specialists or Administrators. Requests from the First Line of Support are received by them.

Specialist Work with Clients

Each specialist is responsible for servicing one or several clients. The number of specialists depends on the size of the company, the complexity of the IT infrastructure, or the type of IT service contract. We have team members who handle just one client, and there are also specialists who are responsible for several companies simultaneously. At Online Support, we ensure that the number of clients and tasks is optimal and balanced.

Mobility

A specialist's work can be more or less mobile. This depends on the number and type of clients. What does this mean in practice?

Support Online signs various types of IT service contracts depending on the needs of the companies we serve. For example, we need to visit some clients twice a week, while we only travel to others in the event of a breakdown. We always strive to provide the best possible conditions for carrying out such tasks. Our employees have access to company cars, which they use for visits or in the event of a breakdown.

Teamwork

Specialist and administrators work in teams of several to a dozen people. It's important to us that each member has support and is replaceable. This helps us avoid organizational problems in the event of illness or vacation, and our employees don't have to worry about their work responsibilities during their free time. A huge advantage of working in teams is the opportunity to share knowledge and receive real support from other team members or the Team Leader.

Technical Areas

Support Online serves over 200 companies, which vary greatly in size and type of business. As a result, our employees are exposed to a wide variety of IT topics. It's impossible to list all the areas you might encounter during your daily work. IT specialists are responsible for both helpdesk and administration tasks (including server installation and configuration, backups, maintaining service performance, ensuring access to file/application resources, Active Directory management, email system management, and terminal services).

Our employees can also participate in additional projects. In collaboration with the Team Leader and the sales department, IT specialists undertake tasks such as configuring server environments based on virtualization solutions, implementing Microsoft 365 services, including Exchange Online, email and resource migrations, launching cloud environments, and implementing various application environments based on customer needs.

In Online Support, you'll encounter many interesting IT areas and experience well-organized teamwork. As an organization, we support our employees in their daily work and development and ensure the highest possible level of expertise. Most of our specialists started their careers in Front-Line Support, but we also occasionally recruit directly for IT Specialist positions. More information about working in Online Support can be found on our careers page.

FAQ

An IT company, or IT firm, deals with information technology in a broad sense. This includes, among other things:

  1. Software design and development: An IT company can create custom applications for other companies or software products for the mass market. Depending on their specialization, these can include mobile applications, desktop applications, web applications, or embedded systems.
  2. Consulting services: An IT company often provides experts to advise on implementing new technologies, optimizing business processes, or selecting appropriate technological solutions.
  3. Cloud solutions: Many IT companies specialize in implementing and managing cloud solutions, such as data storage, application hosting, and data analysis platforms.
  4. IT security: Protection against cyberattacks, security audits, implementing security policies, and network monitoring are just some of the IT companies' responsibilities in this area.
  5. IT infrastructure management: In this area, a company may manage servers, databases, networks, and endpoints.
  6. Technical Support and Service: An IT company may provide support for its own products or general IT support for other companies, managing their technology on a daily basis.
  7. Training: Many IT providers also offer training in software use and secure technology use.
  8. Hardware Solutions: Some IT companies may also provide and configure computer, server, or network hardware.

Depending on their specialization and size, an IT company may offer one, several, or all of the above solutions. When choosing a provider, it's important to thoroughly understand their services and tailor them to your individual needs.

Hiring an IT company like Support Online offers several key benefits over an IT freelancer:

  1. Support from the entire team: An IT company has a full team of specialists, from DevOps specialists and Cyber Security Specialists to IT Helpdesk Specialists, who possess diverse skills and experience, enabling faster problem resolution and the implementation of more complex projects.
  2. Reliability and stability: IT companies have an established reputation and track record, which can translate into greater reliability and stability of services.
  3. Maintenance and support: An IT company can offer service contracts, warranties, and after-sales support, which may be more difficult to obtain from an individual freelancer.
  4. Resources: Companies have access to more resources, tools, and technologies that can accelerate and improve project execution.
  5. Long-term availability: The risk of a freelancer disappearing or changing careers is greater than the risk of a well-established company going out of business.

However, it's worth noting that the choice between a company and a freelancer depends on your specific needs and situation. If you value peace of mind and a quick response to unexpected problems, it is worth choosing an IT company such as Support Online.
